ABADA-Capoeira Brazilian Cultura Day and Jogos 2012

The Brazilian Cultura Day left the public amazed with the different shows performed by ABADA-Capoeira. Once again we brought a taste of the real roots of Afro-Brazilian culture to the Australian public. The performances were followed by second edition of the Capoeira Jogos in two categories. Congratulations to the winners and all participants that made the whole event more than a competition, but a way to bond and have fun doing what we do best, Capoeira! The message Cipo left to all students at the end was the most important, “Capoeira is like life, and you’ll be taken down a million times. The winner will be the one that learned to always stand up. A Capoeirista never give up, if you give up you aren’t a Capoeirista.”

The winners for category A (yellow/orange to orange/blue):
1st Filipino, 2nd Violeta, 3rd Fechado.
The winners for category B (raw to yellow):
1st Passarinha, 2nd Alternativo and 3rd Pantera.
Best on each cord were also rewarded: orange/blue: Filipino, orange: Violeta, yellow/orange: Canibal, yellow: Passarinha, yellow/raw: Florent and raw: Broto!

ABADA-Capoeira
Melbourne Weekend

ABADA-Capoeira
 Melbourne Weekend

On the first weekend of June Graduado Cipo gathered with his students and flew to Melbourne to meet Instructor Flecha, he arrived in Australia 5 months ago and is developing a work with Capoeira in Melbourne.

The objective of the special weekend was to divulge the arrival of ABADA-Capoeira in Melbourne and it was a great success! The weekend was fulfilled with Capoeira rodas, performances and lots of fun. “When I and Rosinha arrived in Australia 7 years there was no ABADA Capoeira here, and we really know and value the importance of helping each other to unify and strength up the group as a family! That’s what ABADA-Capoeira is! A big family! Wherever you go, if ABADA is there you have a family and people looking after you!”, says Cipo.

Intructor Flecha is bringing with him all the latest ABADA-Capoeira techniques, music and Traditional dances such as Maculele, Jongo and Samba de Roda from Brazil. We are really happy and pleased to have him in Australia to help support and develop our so precious art Capoeira. He teaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8pm at AKA Studio, 130 Nicholson Street, East Brunswick and Fridays at 7pm at Fusion Studio, 478 Smith Smith Street, Fitzroy. For more information call 0406 248 702. Big thanks to everyone that participated and made it happen: Graduados Cipo, Rosinha and Bacuri, Instructor Flecha, the Sydney students: Filipino, Risadinha, Violeta and Passarinha; Melbourne students: Rapoza, Boomerangue, Muai and Chuva

Capoeira School Program

Looking for something special for you school sports program?
Kids naturally love to run, jump, cartwheel, stand on their hands –
anything to keep active. It’s essential to their health and their
growth, and that’s exactly what Capoeira is about – promoting a healthy
lifestyle.
Capoeira burns calories, though kids students rarely see this
Brazillian Martial Art as exercise. It’s too much fun for that.
Capoeira is based on continuous, rhythmic movements that increase
strength, endurance, balance, flexibility and coordination.
Each session involves kicking, spinning and cartwheels. Music is also a
central part of the program – a great way to channel all that young
energy.

We have been teaching Capoeira to kids and adults for over 20 years,
the last seven years of which have been in Australia.
Since 2005, the ABADA Capoeira teaching methodology has been
introduced to over 30 Primary Schools and High Schools around the
country, as well as to universities like Sydney University, UNSW,
Macquarie University, and several Youth and Communities centres
and Dance Companies.

ABADA Capoeira wants to inspire children to become more physically
active, with the aim of improving children’s health and lifestyle,
which in turn improves their academic performance.
We would like to be a part of the school team and make the art of
Capoeira one of your sports classes for the next term.

ABADA Capoeira also offers Workshops and Performances as an alternative
cultural experience.
Do not miss this opportunity to book. Email us at

Who is our Guest Mestrando Pernilongo?

The elite group of Mestrandos(as) in the ABADÁ-Capoeira over sixty-thousand-member organization is comprised of only nine individuals (seven men, two women) who have made a life-long commitment to the art of Capoeira. Their enduring dedication has been instrumental in maintaining the distinctive technique and philosophy of ABADÁ-Capoeira. Led by the Mestres, these individuals oversee ABADÁ-Capoeira throughout the world, to ensure that our style, technique and philosophy is preserved, and above all, the art of Capoeira continues to expand without jeopardizing its essence.

The Mestrandos(as), together with the Mestres, are also responsible for the further enhancement of movements, norms and ethics within the organization.

Sidney Mauricio Tempesta, Mestrando Pernilongo (Mosquito), was born in Americana, country town of Sao Paulo State, in 5thSeptember 1973.

He has first seen Capoeira at a street roda in 1985 in Americana. He loved and started training with Mestre Carlos from Filhos da Terra Association.
The beginning was tough, as the academy was far away from his house and he had to either walk or ride his bike to get there. Times were hard and sometimes his dad wouldn’t give him money to pay Capoeira fees, what made him at age of 12 years old take few casual jobs to be able to continue training. But it was love at first sight and at the end of 1985; Pernilongo was baptized and received his first graduation.

In 1988 he met Mestre Cobra. Mestre Cobra at that time was leaving and training with Mestre Camisa. Around that time Mestre Carlos wasn’t teaching in Americana anymore, so Pernilongo decided to go to Rio de Janeiro to see Mestre Camisa’s work. He identified himself with the training structure, the work organization that ABADA Capoeira provided, he has even thought of moving to Rio de Janeiro, but at age of 16yo it was just too soon.

He kept training and soon later met Instructor Yves in Barretos (another country town of Sao Paulo State). Yves was a student of Mestre Camisa which lived and taught Capoeira in Campinas a city located 38 km from Americana. They spoken and Pernilongo started travelling along with Yves to Rio de Janeiro in order to integrate to ABADA Capoeira and begun teaching in Americana.

In 1993 Yves became very sick. It was an awful moment to Pernilongo as Yves was a hard work capoeirista that loved training. At the end of that same year Yves passed away.
Pernilongo continued travelling to Rio de Janeiro and also to others states of Brazil, training with Mestre Camisa and developing his work in Americana. At that stage Pernilongo already had Capoeira as his profession.

In 1996 he received from Mestre Camisa the Instructor graduation (Purple cord) and was already responsible for many students teaching in many country towns of Sao Paulo. In 1998 organized the first edition of ABADA Capoeira Jogos Paulista (Sao Paulo Inter-state Games) with the participation of over 30 cities within Sao Paulo State and workshop ministered by Mestre Camisa. Paulista Games are today on its 11thedition. In 2000 opened his own academy in Americana, ABADA Capoeira Cultural Centre, where the space is completely focussed in Capoeira. But continued working with Americana Faculty FAM, doing social projects and events.

In 2005 was recognized Mestrando in 2005 and is one of the responsible for the State of Sao Paulo ABADÁ-Capoeira work, supervising over 50 Capoeira professionals.
Pernilongo was present in several ABADA Capoeira workshops, has travelled all around Brazil and throughout the world in countries such as South Africa, Korea, USA, France, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Germany, Mexico and many others.
This year Mestrando Pernilongo will share his knowledge with ABADA Capoeira Australia, on our second edition of the event the standard are kept high and he will contribute to enhance our Capoeira experience and giving us tips about the most up-to-date Capoeira techniques, songs and mandinga, brought straight from Brazil.

Also invited to ABADA Capoeira Festival, our special guest Professor Pretinho from Rio de Janeiro, one of the best Capoeira Songs Composer with hits such as "Eeee lalae laela, lalae laela, lele lele lala... Capoeira comecou com roda tradicional...", and much more!!! So if you want to improve your music skills you can't miss out his workshop!

ABADA Capoeira 2011 Australin Batizado and Capoeira Festival - from 3 to 6 November 2011, or more info call Cipo 0408 716 264.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to participate of the whole 4 days event. Make the most of each minute, I can assure you that every drop of sweat will be worth!

We hope you have enjoyed the reading.
