Their enduring dedication has been instrumental in maintaining the distinctive technique and philosophy of ABADÁ-Capoeira. Led by the Mestres, these individuals oversee ABADÁ-Capoeira throughout the world, to ensure that our style, technique and philosophy is preserved, and above all, the art of Capoeira continues to expand without jeopardizing its essence.

The Mestrandos(as), together with the Mestres, are also responsible for the further enhancement of movements, norms and ethics within the organization.

Sidney Mauricio Tempesta, Mestrando Pernilongo (Mosquito), was born in Americana, country town of Sao Paulo State, in 5thSeptember 1973.

He has first seen Capoeira at a street roda in 1985 in Americana. He loved and started training with Mestre Carlos from Filhos da Terra Association.
The beginning was tough, as the academy was far away from his house and he had to either walk or ride his bike to get there. Times were hard and sometimes his dad wouldn’t give him money to pay Capoeira fees, what made him at age of 12 years old take few casual jobs to be able to continue training. But it was love at first sight and at the end of 1985; Pernilongo was baptized and received his first graduation.

In 1988 he met Mestre Cobra. Mestre Cobra at that time was leaving and training with Mestre Camisa. Around that time Mestre Carlos wasn’t teaching in Americana anymore, so Pernilongo decided to go to Rio de Janeiro to see Mestre Camisa’s work. He identified himself with the training structure, the work organization that ABADA Capoeira provided, he has even thought of moving to Rio de Janeiro, but at age of 16yo it was just too soon.

He kept training and soon later met Instructor Yves in Barretos (another country town of Sao Paulo State). Yves was a student of Mestre Camisa which lived and taught Capoeira in Campinas a city located 38 km from Americana. They spoken and Pernilongo started travelling along with Yves to Rio de Janeiro in order to integrate to ABADA Capoeira and begun teaching in Americana.

In 1993 Yves became very sick. It was an awful moment to Pernilongo as Yves was a hard work capoeirista that loved training. At the end of that same year Yves passed away.
Pernilongo continued travelling to Rio de Janeiro and also to others states of Brazil, training with Mestre Camisa and developing his work in Americana. At that stage Pernilongo already had Capoeira as his profession.

In 1996 he received from Mestre Camisa the Instructor graduation (Purple cord) and was already responsible for many students teaching in many country towns of Sao Paulo. In 1998 organized the first edition of ABADA Capoeira Jogos Paulista (Sao Paulo Inter-state Games) with the participation of over 30 cities within Sao Paulo State and workshop ministered by Mestre Camisa. Paulista Games are today on its 11thedition. In 2000 opened his own academy in Americana, ABADA Capoeira Cultural Centre, where the space is completely focussed in Capoeira. But continued working with Americana Faculty FAM, doing social projects and events.

In 2005 was recognized Mestrando in 2005 and is one of the responsible for the State of Sao Paulo ABADÁ-Capoeira work, supervising over 50 Capoeira professionals.
Pernilongo was present in several ABADA Capoeira workshops, has travelled all around Brazil and throughout the world in countries such as South Africa, Korea, USA, France, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Germany, Mexico and many others.
This year Mestrando Pernilongo will share his knowledge with ABADA Capoeira Australia, on our second edition of the event the standard are kept high and he will contribute to enhance our Capoeira experience and giving us tips about the most up-to-date Capoeira techniques, songs and mandinga, brought straight from Brazil.

Also invited to ABADA Capoeira Festival, our special guest Professor Pretinho from Rio de Janeiro, one of the best Capoeira Songs Composer with hits such as "Eeee lalae laela, lalae laela, lele lele lala... Capoeira comecou com roda tradicional...", and much more!!! So if you want to improve your music skills you can't miss out his workshop!

ABADA Capoeira 2011 Australin Batizado and Capoeira Festival - from 3 to 6 November 2011, or more info call Cipo 0408 716 264.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to participate of the whole 4 days event. The difference in number and quality of Capoeira is visible, ABADA - Capoeira Sydney begun 5 years ago with very few students which wouldn't fill up a Roda, but along the years we have developed a very high level of Capoeiristas and are with no doubts within the top 3 Capoeira Rodas in Australia. It has been a great journey that meant a lot of hard work and we know it is much to come. All this work give us not only physical Strength but mental power to proceed.

The ones who saw ABADA-Capoeira Sydney, from its very beginning are witness of all achievement we have accomplished and the ones who just come along are more than welcome to become part of it.

We hope ABADA-Capoeira in Australia never stop growing and become not just another Capoeira Group but a team which support and understand each other for good and bad times.

See you guys i training

God bless u all

Cipo

Who is Mestrando Peixe Cru

The elite group of Mestrandos(as) in the ABADÁ-Capoeira sixty-thousand-member organization is comprised of only nine individuals (seven men, two women) who have made a life-long commitment to the art of Capoeira.

Paulo Rogerio Yoneyama, Mestrando Peixe Cru was born in Sao Paulo in 9th January 1970.

He was only 11 years old when he saw Capoeira for the first time. On that same year, against his mum’s desire, he started training at Mestre Meinha’s Academy with his older brother Paixada.

In 1985 he was graduated as a “Tutor Junior” and in 1987 when Mestre Meinha closed his Academy, started teaching Capoeira with his brother Peixada. That was the beginning of his own Academy. During that time he was always travelling with his student to prestige events and batizados of other Capoeira groups.

In 1991 had his first contact with ABADA-Capoeira, where he met Cobra and other members of the group. The manner of playing and ABADA’s technique brought back the first feelings Peixe Cru felt when he saw Capoeira for the first time. On that same year attended to a course Mestre Camisa lectured in Sao Paulo.

He was very interested by the Group philosophy and technique, and through the next few years went to Rio de Janeiro several times to train and get to know the ABADÁ-Capoeira. In 1993 has officially joined ABADÁ-Capoeira, at that time he received an Instructor graduation, the “Purple” cord.

After that Peixe Cru had a prominent history in the Capoeira World, he won three times the 3° place on ABADÁ-Capoeira World Games (Jogos Mundiais) 1997, 1999 and 2001; in 1998 won the 2° place on ABADÁ-Capoeira Brazilian Games (Jogos Brasileiros) and 1° place on ABADÁ-Capoeira Sao Paulo Games (Jogos Paulistas) and in 2000 won the 1° place on ABADÁ-Capoeira Brazilian Games (Jogos Brasileiros).

Peixe Cru was recognized Mestrando in 2005 and is one of the responsible for the State of Sao Paulo ABADÁ-Capoeira work, supervising over 50 Capoeira professionals. He has traveled to several countries to spread his Capoeira knowledge to other ABADÁ-Capoeira groups around the world, between them are Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Swiss land, Italy, Belgian, Luxembourg, Austria, South Africa, Angola, Luanda, Israel, Russia, Japan, South Korea and Morocco.

This year is Australia’s turn to get a bit of Mestrando Peixe Cru knowledge, experience and tips about the most up-to-date Capoeira techniques, songs and mandinga, brought straight from Brazil. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to participate of the whole 4 days event. Make the most of each minute, I can assure you that every drop of sweat will be worth!

Next edition we will talk a bit about our Batizado special Guest Professor Eberson. The event was always very special and emotional for people like us that love Capoeira, and participating in the baptism of new students in our school, as well as having the opportunity to watch visiting teachers and graduated students play together, was a tremendous experience. It was also accompanied by a “Troca de Corda” (change of cord), where students would reach their new graduation level (or, on occasion, beyond that!) and get recognized for the hard work they had gone through all year. Everybody is happy at Batizado time, it’s a time of celebration, not a test.

So what should you expect if you’re about to have a Batizado? If this is your first such event, you are probably going to get a Capoeira name, or “Apelido”. This is the nickname that you’re known by throughout your Capoeira ‘career’. Apelidos are generally given out by someone of the group after we have got an idea of what you are like as individual. They are names like Cobra, Amarelo, etc, which represent an aspect of your character. You likely won’t get the nickname you expect though, I assure you that, and sometimes you might even be thrown off by what you are named. In these cases, you usually grow into it, so don’t stress.

It was different in back then, but in our case ABADA Capoeira Australia, that time of year is the only opportunity we will get to see a Mestrando live. Needless to say, this adds even more intensity to the few days we will have with him; we will have workshops where we will be taught directly by one of the best Capoeiristas of our school, get to speak to him at length afterwords, maybe even get to know him on a personal level. For a new student, particularly a non-Brazilian one with limited exposure to the roots of Capoeira, this is incredible. We would recommend taking every opportunity you can to go to every class during this period, since they don’t happen that often.

The story of the Batizado, like many things in Capoeira’s pedagogy begins with the creator of Capoeira Regional - Manoel dos Reis Machado, also known as Mestre Bimba. Mestre Bimba introduced the Batizado as a naming ceremony for beginner students who had been training for long enough to have partial mastery over a predefined series of movements. In the original Capoeira Batizado there were no sweeps; Mestre Bimba considered the rasteira too dangerous a movement for this level. After the Batizado a student was named and given a coloured silk scarf. The colours changed as the student moved up through Capoeira’s ranks, with the final colour being white and indicating Mestre. Why silk scarves? This was in homage to the sharp dressing Capoeiristas of old times who wore silk scarves around their necks to protect from razor slashes. Silk will stop a razor slash. Over time silk scarves became belts – “cordas”, then as Capoeira organizations formed and diverged so did their systems of belts. Today, each major group has its own system.

Next edition we will talk a bit about our Batizado special Guests Mestrando Peixe Cru and Professor Eberson. We have seen and played on excellent Roda's, on which all of my students have represented very well the name of ABADA-Capoeira. I witnessed some amazing games that made me very proud of you all as your instructor.

We have also had the chance to meet Mestre Geni (a renowned Brazilian Capoeira Master, which has been a student of Mestre Bimba, the same Mestre that our Mestre Camisa has been student of and also a personal friend of our Mestre). He has complimented our work after watch our performance, saying that this is the way to go and that we have a grand future ahead. It coming from such a notorious Mestre should be taken as a big honour for all of us.

As well I would like to proudly announce that we have achieved a 1st place on the 1st Asia Pacific Capoeira Open:

CONGRATULATIONS TO ROSINHA!!!
1st place in the advanced female category

It is important to remind that this year Rosinha did not miss a single class, plus she has been doing extra training at the gym to improve her performance, so her dedication has been paid off and I am sure she is a role model to be followed.

To the others students, I would like to congratulate you all for giving it a chance and having experienced Capoeira on its essence, not only as a martial art, but as a whole cultural experience. Meeting different levels of students, instructors, professors, masters, singing, playing instruments, playing Capoeira and feeling the energy that it brings to everyone. I believe that none of you will look Capoeira with the same eyes you have seen before and I am sure it has been an inspiration. As I always say, the efforts you put into Capoeira it is nothing compared with the benefits Capoeira brings to you, as you all have witnessed and experienced, the energy it brings compensates it all.

Well, this year is just about to finish and we can relax a bit, but another year is coming up soon and hopefully we will have our 1st own Capoeira Grading and Workshops next year, when the spotlight will be all yours, so be prepared to show to all the Capoeiristas in Australia what you are capable of. You may don’t realise, but you are part of ABADA-Capoeira’s history, as the 1st ABADA-Capoeira Group in Australia (as you know ABADA-Capoeira is already in more then 30 countries in the whole world).

Bye for now, I hope you have enjoyed our time together.

See you Guys at classes.

Cheers,

Graduado Cipo
ABADA-Capoeira Australia
Official website: http://www.abadacapoeira.com.au/
ABADA-Capoeira e-mail: info@abadacapoeira.com.au

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://abadacapoeiraau.blogspot.com/2008/12/abada-capoeira-australia-newsletter.html' title='ABADA-Capoeira AU Newsletter .
